Math Art: Fantastic Angles Art Lesson Every Kid Will Love

Project Setup

Materials use:

  • 12x18 Cardstock Paper

  • Pencils

  • Felt-Tip Black Markers

  • Crayons

  • Coloring Pencils

  • Oil Pastels

  • Markers

  • Protractor

  • Ruler

  • Art prints by Picasso, Matisse, and Kandinksy

The students and I used a ruler to draw lines all over the page to create triangles. We measured at least ten angles and identified them as acute, obtuse, and/or right triangles. This was a good review of a math concept that can sometimes be difficult for students to remember.

We then used Sharpies, crayons, and oil pastels to add color to the artwork. With this, students were able to be as creative as they wanted to be.

Lessons Learned

This is another one of those ubiquitous lessons. We tried it and it turned out great. The patterns created in each shape make the work very visually appealing. Plus, telling the students they have to create a different pattern in each shape takes the cognitive demand of the tasks to a higher level.

From an educator’s perspective, students use angles to create non-objective artwork. By looking at famous artists’ artwork, they are able to see that they also use angles.

Final Thoughts

When doing this project, don’t hesitate to take your time and go over any concepts that students may be struggling with - especially with identifying the different types of triangles. Their math teacher will thank you for that. Also, thank you to TPSD 4th grade teachers for the inspiration!
